Another Fly Away Give Away

The release of Fly Away got pushed back a couple of times, so I started blogging about it a wee too early. Well, it should be in stores in Feb and is starting to show up. I found it here and here. And keep checking the list I have on my blog as well.

So because I have been teasing you I at the very least should give another yard away. Just leave me a comment on which fabric you would like - check out my pictures of the prints here (keep scrolling down to see the collection).

Also, the minky fabrics will be available for wholesale the end of March.

I get contacted frequently and have consulted with many creative people getting started in illustration and pattern design. I decided to begin offering illustration and design portfolio reviews, consultation, and mentoring. I will do a free informational interview up front to see if what I have to offer is a good fit for you and to find out what your goals are. I have also learned that everyone's situation is so different, my aim is to individualize what I have to offer. I will be including the following issues in my consultation: portfolio reviews and discussion on how to best present your work, how to contact potential clients, the ups and downs of the business side of things, and how to negotiate selling and licensing your work.

Every working illustrator and designer that I have met does things a little differently - I would share how I have navigated this business and how I continue to try to keep up with changes in the industry. There is no magic bullet, particularly during a tough economy, but if you believe in yourself and are persistent, positive, and productive (my three p's), then anything is possible.

My Fly Away collection should be hitting stores any moment - Hancock's Paducah seems to have it in stock at the moment and other retailers should have it soon, many vendors email you when the shipment comes in.

This year has started off swiftly for me with multiple exciting illustration projects. A magazine illustration for Cricket magazine, a new collection for Robert Kaufman, some paper plates for Dixie's line at Target and some fun kid's cups. A few years ago I illustrated a bathroom kid's cup for Dixie. It has been on the shelves for a couple of years but I have passed them by in the aisles of Target until the other day when I scooped up a couple of boxes. I am now working on a set of new cups - a real fun project which I will share when they are ready to be sold. These however are still on the shelves at Target. I hope your year is off to a roaring start.

I have some new book news! The "Mouse and the Elephant" is a traditional Indian folk tale that I recently illustrated for Oxford University Press. It is now available to order worldwide. I have ordering info here. Amazon.com in the US sells it in a pack of four with three other tales. What was especially challenging about illustrating this book was the fact that there is no text so the entire story needed to be told by the pictures alone.

This is my longest running fabric I have had to date - it was in my very first collection (On A Whim) with Robert Kaufman and to my surprise, is still going strong.

There is no explaining why color has always been so important to me, but I have been thinking about my beloved box of 64 Crayolas when I was a kid. Funny thing is, my favorite colors then, are my favorite colors still. And the same is true with my least favorite colors.

My favorites were melon, aquamarine, goldenrod, periwinkle, and scarlet. There weren't too many colors I didn't like, but maroon was one of them.

London Part 2 - Small World

I was sitting outside the Tate Modern with my family and some friends that live in England who were spending the day with us. We were snacking on some luscious strawberries from Borough Market when I happened to notice an adorable pigtailed girl with a pink balloon in a dress with an overall heart pattern. And then I realized the fabric was from the All My Heart collection that I designed for Robert Kaufman. I went inside the museum a few minutes later and there she was again. I introduced myself to her family who had just recently moved to London from the U.S.

I had a crazy day yesterday full of surprises! I went to my PO Box which is in a Hallmark gift shop and saw these adorable fabric animal purses and then noticed this horse was made out of On A Whim 2 flowers and stripes.

Then when I got home I found a surprise package from Highlights with this inside -

A platinum plate award for best illustration for a mini-book in 2010. Yay! I love surprises.
